Building a Winning Team
Creating Classroom Expectations

Introduction

The season is about to begin, and as coach you're concerned about making this the best year possible. You know you have the raw talent waiting eagerly in front of you, but what are you going to do to assure that each player is able to contribute to the success of the team as well as have many "personal best" experiences?

Even before you begin to address your team, you are probably asking yourself:

     - Are rules absolutely necessary?

     - How are winning teams created?

     - What should I say about being a good team member?

     - What rights and privileges is this team going to expect? What sacrifices will I expect in return?

     - What can the team expect of me?

As you go about making these decisions, you will be reading from a wide variety of material on the web (1) and will need to evaluate and decide how to make use of ideas from those sources (7). You will be asked to reflect on your discoveries (11) and persuasively and creatively present your conclusions (4) as your group considers the problem of how to lead this class to the "winning-est" record imagineable!

(To get a sneak preview of the season, compare the numbers in the paragraph above with the national English Language Arts Standards and you will discover a few of the skills you will be working on this year!)
